One of the best questions she asked during this scene was how many more people need to die before we can work and understand each other, which was Tillman’s question to the audience that still applies in modern day society.
It was a powerful moment as everyone who was so inclined to hate one another came together.

She brought up an amazing point about how only love can drive out hate and that we will never truly be equal unless we all can see each other as humans rather than skin colors. Starr cried out and deescalated the situation by retrieving the gun and crying out about how the cycle of violence will never end with hate. After the police arrived at the scene, Starr’s youngest brother Sekani pointed a gun at King as everything else went silent (a picture from the scene below). Maverick and a few other bystanders got them both out of the burning building that King and his gang started as revenge. During all the craziness as people covered the streets, Starr went to her father’s grocery store where she and Seven got stuck inside the fire-bombed building.
The grand jury did not indict the officer which resulted in many peaceful protests and destructive riots. The gang threatened Starr and told her there would be consequences if she continued to fight. When she was caught in an argument defending Khalil’s character, she named the King Lords which was the gang that controlled her area of town. She agreed to public interviews on television and to testify in front of the grand jury in effort to convict the officer.

The constant pressure from keeping that night a secret for weeks and then being publicly broadcasted on national TV calling for justice took a heavy toll on her mental health as a 16 year-old girl. Starr’s identity as the witness was protected for weeks after the murder until she decided to come forward to fight for justice on Khalil’s behalf. The officer quickly realized it was a hairbrush and not a weapon and it became a national news story. Khalil turned over to comfort Starr and grabbed her hairbrush in a joking manner when the officer shot and killed him with no hesitation.

The officer demanded that Khalil and Starr leave their hands on the dashboard as he was checking his license and tags. As they were driving home they were pulled over by an officer for failing to use a turning signal when switching lanes. She left a party with her close childhood friend, Khalil, after a gun went off in the crowd. Being one of the only black students in a mostly white school made many people either appreciate or target her for being different.
She was well liked in school as she fit in with the white girls by being very bubbly and happy all the time. Starr struggled to have two different personas and realities as her social and home life couldn’t be more different. Her father’s local grocery store financially supported her family and her education, as she was able to attend a mostly white private highschool named Williamson Prep. Starr was raised in a hard working middle-class family in the predominantly black neighborhood of Garden Heights.

It was an extremely popular movie that came out in 2018 and it was about the life of a young black girl named Starr Carter. One of my all time favorite movies is “The Hate U Give” directed by George Tillman.
